FIVE E LESSON PLANS
Engage: get students' attention, connect to real life
Explore: students take real data. (NOTE: it's not exploring if the students aren't encountering the real world and taking data of some kind.)
Explain together: teachers help students make sense of data using their data, help them develop ideas and introduce vocabulary as necessary.
Expand: apply ideas to a new but related situations.
Evaluate: both formative (all along) and summative; must be related to objectives and the teacher must have an idea what she's looking for.
Example for Sound:
Engage- story of kingdom, plastic eggs
Explore- cups with rubber bands
Explain Together- use data to develop ideas and vocabulary
Expand- build an instrument
Evaluate All Along- teacher observations (both formative and summative), summative could be a letter to the silent wizard
Example for Kinetic Energy:
Engage- how fast can we pass the ball from student to student if we form a circle?
Explore- build "slow track"
Explain Together- use data to introduce vocabulary and reinforce demonstrations
Expand- build "fast track"
Evaluate- "Educreate" on iPad (video showing what the students learned)
